Case : 177.One well-known artisan producing tarot cards in the Marseille pattern was Nicolas Conver (circa 1760) called Tarot de Conver. This deck came to the attention of Antoine Court de GΓ©belin in the late 18th century, who called the attention of occultists to tarot decks. As such, Conver's deck became the model for most subsequent esoteric decks, starting with the deck designed by Etteilla forward. Cartomancy with the Tarot de Marseille was definitely being practised in divination throughout France by the end of the 18th century. This version, become the standard of all design of tarot occult and divination. From the mid-18th to early 19th centuries, Tarot de Marseille, now only used for occult purpose, were replaced by the French-suited animal tarots throughout most of Europe for playing games. And then superseded by genre art Tarot Nouveau in mid-19th century. Though not designed for cartomancy, these cards of Tarot Nouveau, like Industrie und GlΓΌck, were used widely in South-America as the fortune telling decks today.
